Your machine is down. Production is stopped. You type “CNC repair near me” into Google, and you get a list of shops within driving distance. You call the first few. They all sound competent. They all say they can help. They all give you a price.
And then you have to make a decision with almost no useful information.
This is the moment where most shop managers either get lucky — or learn an expensive lesson. Because finding a CNC repair shop that’s geographically close is easy. Finding one that’s actually qualified to work on your specific machine, with the right equipment, the right parts, and the right process, is a different challenge entirely.

Why “Near Me” Is the Starting Point, Not the Answer
Proximity matters. When your machine is down, every day costs money — in lost output, idle labour, and delayed orders. Getting a spindle or a control system looked at quickly is a legitimate priority. Nobody is arguing you should ship a broken spindle to the other side of the country if there’s a qualified shop twenty minutes away.
But “near me” is a geographic filter, not a quality filter. A shop that’s five minutes down the road and does mediocre work will cost you far more than a specialist forty miles away who does it right first time. The cost of a repeat failure — the second repair, the additional downtime, the potential consequential damage to your machine — almost always exceeds whatever you saved on a shorter drive.

Step 1: Be Specific About What You Actually Need
“CNC repair” covers an enormous range of work. Before you start calling shops, be clear about what type of repair you’re looking for — because not all CNC repair shops cover the same ground.
The main categories are:
Spindle repair and rebuild. This is a highly specialised discipline involving precision bearing replacement, shaft inspection, dynamic balancing, and performance testing. Not every CNC repair shop does this, and of those that do, quality varies enormously. If your spindle is the problem, you need a spindle specialist — not a general CNC repair shop that does spindle work on the side.

Step 2: Build a Shortlist — Then Verify Each One
Once you have a list of shops from your search, don’t call them yet. Spend ten minutes doing basic verification on each one before you pick up the phone. It will save you far more than ten minutes in the long run.
Check their website for specifics. A competent CNC repair shop will have a website that describes what they actually do in detail — the types of machines they work on, the brands they service, the specific processes they follow. If a website is vague, generic, or reads like it could apply to any trade business, that’s informative. It usually means the shop is a generalist taking whatever work comes in, rather than a specialist who knows their field deeply.

Check for reviews, but read them carefully. Google reviews are a useful signal, but look beyond the star rating. Read the content. Are people mentioning fast fixes that failed later? Are positive reviews specific about the work done, or just general? A pattern of “great service, quick turnaround” without any mention of long-term results tells you something different from “repaired our Fanuc spindle three months ago, still running perfectly.”
Look for industry associations or certifications. While the CNC repair industry doesn’t have a single universal certification body, shops that take quality seriously often have documented affiliations — authorised service partnerships with machine manufacturers, supplier relationships with named component brands, or membership in relevant industry bodies.
Step 3: Ask the Right Questions Before You Commit
Once you’ve narrowed your list to two or three credible candidates, call them. Not to get a price — to qualify them. The questions you ask, and the quality of the answers you get, will tell you most of what you need to know.
“Have you worked on this specific machine and fault type before?”
This is the first and most important question. A shop with genuine experience on your machine type will answer specifically — they’ll tell you what they typically see on that platform, common failure modes, parts they stock. A shop that hasn’t will give a general answer about their broad capabilities. That gap matters enormously when the technician is standing in front of your machine with a problem to diagnose.
“What does your diagnostic process look like?”
Any reputable repair shop starts with a proper diagnostic assessment — not a guess, not a standard parts swap, but an actual investigation of what went wrong and why. For spindle work, this means full disassembly and inspection before any repair scope is confirmed. For control and electrical faults, it means systematic fault isolation using the right diagnostic tools for the specific control platform.

A shop that stands behind their work offers a clear, written warranty with defined coverage and a straightforward claims process. Be wary of very short warranty periods — less than three months on a spindle rebuild, for example — or warranties with so many exclusions that they’re effectively meaningless. Ask what happens if the fault recurs: do they collect the machine or component, or do you have to return it? Is there a charge for diagnostic work on a warranty claim?
Step 4: Understand the True Cost of Downtime
When you’re comparing quotes from different shops, it’s tempting to focus on the repair price. That’s understandable — it’s the number that appears on the invoice.
But the repair price is only one component of what the decision actually costs you. The more important figure is downtime cost — what it costs your business for every day the machine sits idle.
If your machine generates £3,000 per day in output, the difference between a five-day repair turnaround and a ten-day one is £15,000 in lost production. That’s before you consider idle labour, the downstream effect on order fulfilment, and the cost of expediting alternative production elsewhere.
Against that number, paying a premium for a shop with a faster turnaround — or for expedited service from a specialist — often makes straightforward financial sense. A repair shop that charges 20 percent more but gets you back online three days faster is, in most real-world scenarios, the cheaper option.
Ask every shop on your list for an honest turnaround estimate — not the optimistic version they give to win the job, but the realistic one. Ask what their current workload is. Ask whether expedited service is available and what it involves. The shops that give you straight answers to these questions are generally the ones that will deliver.
Step 5: Don’t Confuse Local With Limited
One of the habits worth breaking when searching for CNC repair is the assumption that you’re limited to whoever is physically closest.
For machine repair that requires on-site work — axis alignment, machine calibration, control installation — local is genuinely important. You need a technician who can come to you.
For component-level repair — spindles, servo drives, control boards, gearboxes — the component travels to the shop, not the other way around. That changes the geography entirely. A specialist spindle repair facility that’s eighty miles away and turns work around in seven days with documented test results is a better option than a generalist ten minutes down the road that takes three weeks and sends it back without a test report.

Red Flags to Watch Out For
Before you commit to any CNC repair shop, watch for these warning signs:
They quote a price before seeing or diagnosing the problem. A repair scope that’s quoted before inspection is either a guess or a minimum-effort job regardless of what they find. Neither is good.
They’re vague about parts and process. If a shop can’t or won’t tell you specifically what parts they use and how they verify the repair, that vagueness is usually intentional.
No written warranty. A shop that won’t put warranty terms in writing doesn’t have confidence in what they’re sending back to you.
